Spectra Musica is an auditioned chamber choir of 24 singers under Musical Director, Peter Leech, based in Wincanton, Somerset. We perform three times a year throughout the South West of England. At our heart is a repertoire which spans six centuries and embraces all styles of music including music by Palestrina, Monteverdi, Byrd, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Elgar, Fauré, Vaughan Williams, Shearing, Seiber, Bernstein, Gershwin, Lloyd Webber, Chilcott and Leech.
The evening as a whole gave me a very positive impression of the choir, the conductor and the general aim of producing an informal but polished evening’s musical diversion - with the added bonus of enjoying those very welcome ‘refreshments’ in the interval, which in turn offered an opportunity to chat to people.
The more ‘classical’ pieces were beautiful. Both the pieces by Bob Chilcott were excellent. It was an absolute treat to hear The (gruesome!) Goslings!! And ten-out-of-ten to you all for diction - the tragic tale came over with utter clarity.
I thought the two ‘jazz evergreens’ worked well. I know that ‘traditional’ choirs often have trouble ‘swinging a beat’, but there seemed to be no such reserve at the end of the two halves. Nice and relaxed.
